Marian Keaney's Publications

In the early 1990's, Hodder & Stoughton published Mountains of Heaven and Everest Reconnaissance,
edited by historian and author Marian Keaney. Mountains of Heaven, which Keaney dedicated to Rex Beaumont,
contains Howard-Bury's journal of his travels along the Tian Shan mountains in 1913. Everest Reconnaissance contains an
edited version of the official published account of the 1921 expedition, to which Howard-Bury had been the primary contributor.
Keaney's highly-regarded and popular publications were instrumental in making new generations aware of Howard-Bury's life and travels.

Everest Reconnaissance reprints the official account of the 1921 expedition that was published in 1922. Marian Keaney also included an edited version of Howard-Bury's 1920 account of his journey across the Tibetan border.

At the time the above books were published, Marian Keaney was the Chief Librarian in Westmeath County Council, based in Mullingar. Rex Beaumont first introduced her to the Howard-Bury diaries and the wealth of documents and photos that needed sorting and cataloguing. It was through her efforts that this material was preserved, becoming the Charles Howard-Bury collection in Mullingar Public Library.

Although known internationally through her Howard-Bury publications, Keaney's research interests extend to many areas. She has written numerous books and articles on Irish literary celebrities as well as on Howard-Bury, his life, travels and career.
