We had experience of
wonderful moments...

An exhibition to commemorate Charles Howard-Bury
and the 1921 reconnaissance mission to Mount Everest
The exhibition is researched and designed by Ian Kenneally
on behalf of
Westmeath County Council and Belvedere House and Gardens.

Photos are provided by:
Marian Keaney, the Charles-Howard Bury Collection of Westmeath Library Services, the National Library of Ireland, the Royal Geographical Society, the Alpine Club Photo Library, London, and the Frank Nugent Collection.

The exhibition title comes from an account by George Leigh Mallory, a member of the 1921 reconnaissance team:

'
It is the property of all that is most sublime in mountain scenery to be uniquely splendid, or at least to seem so, and it is commonly the fate of the sublime in this sort very soon to be mixed with what is trivial. Not infrequently we had experience of wonderful moments...'
